*What is ekrina? - Simply put, it is our daughter’s middle name. I’m sure, as parents, we all have some difficulty in naming our children. Since mommy is predominantly of Irish descent and daddy is predominantly of Vietnamese/Chinese descent, we would be looking at different ends of the spectrum in finding an appropriate name.
Coincidently, both of us have grandparents with Russian roots and with that we aimed to name our daughter, Ekaterina. One little drawback, however, is that it was a "long" name (no pun intended) and we didn’t want to make it too unfair for her if she would one day get in trouble at school and was forced to write her name 100 times on the chalkboard.
Subsequently, Ekaterina was shortened to Ekrina, a unique never-before-done version. Ekrina is written as Екрина in Cyrillic (Russian) and apparently, can be transliterated into έκρινα an indicative conjugation of ΚΡΙΝΩ, an ancient Greek verb meaning "determined or to decide".
