Alladin Opening Night

Time goes by fast! After a month’s worth of rehearsal involving strenuous dancing, singing and acting (not to mention a week-long interlude to Alaska), opening night was a smash hit.

Although, I’ve heard Ekrina practice her songs around the house, I tried to keep myself free of spoilers up until the first performance and boy was I amazed at how the show came along. Ekrina was superb in delivering her lines and angelic in her songs, but more than that, I was completely taken by surprise at how well she acted - creating an illusion that thespians strive to perfect. In fact, it’s a strange feeling to watch someone you know on stage and at the same time see a totally different person, in this case, her character, Aligha.

As this was not the Alladin musical most of us have become so well acquainted with due to Disney’s hugely popular animated feature, I was prepared for that "Off-Broadway" flavor. But, I was doubly surprised as aside from my daughter’s wonderful performance, I was also captivated by the evil Jamal and his equally twisted brother, Hal. Overall, the show was both visually and musically enchanting with humor that kept me at the edge of my seat till curtain call.

Rating: ★★★★★ Wonderfully Magical

P.S. Special thanks to Ekrina’s mom, Jenny, for getting Ekrina to the audition, endless rehearsals and for never taking "no" for an answer.
