House M.D. returns from hiatus!

Ok, so essentially I have covered the basic structure of the episodes as well as the main characters in all of the episodes through the end of Season Three.  Season Three ended in such a way that it was obvious that there would be a major change in the beginning of Season Four.  It was questionable if all the main characters would be back and if they were back it was rumored that they would be playing different roles.  Wow, was I in suspense waiting for Season Four to premiere.

Then it did.  Ugh.

Gone was the predictably formulaic House along with his Fellows.  House, M.D. season four premiered with only Dr. House, Dr. Cuddy and Dr. Wilson remaining as part of the staff of Princeton-Plainsboro.  Under Cuddy’s directive, House embarks on a mission to fill the three recently vacated fellowship positions.  And while that sounds like a decent premise for the start of the season it didn’t really seem to work.  To me it felt like the creative minds behind the show wanted to incorporate some elements of other currently popular television shows including reality shows into the story arc.

House hires a ton of Doctors that might potentially become his three Fellows and puts them into a “Survivor”-esque competition for the jobs.  There were just too many doctors involved in this competition for me to even attempt to give you a detailed bio on each one and why they would or would not have been a good fit for House’s esteemed assistants.  In the process of running Survivor-House, the would-be fellows break any number of moral/ethical/legal codes and one or two manage to seriously injure or kill a patient.  Prior to season four, the character of House seemed like a doctor who might not empathize with patients but he never seemed like someone who would cause a patient harm through his own negligence.

Tonight marks the 10th episode of the fourth season (I think).  The new team of fellows was picked a few episodes ago from the pool of contestants and now they have worked together a bit.  I am pleased to say that based on today’s episode, it seems like House is returning to the old formula of the previous three seasons.  Dr.s Cameron, Chase and Foreman all returned to the series throughout this season and are employed in a different positions within Princeton-Plainsboro.  Although they are no longer directly reporting to House, it seems like their main role on the series is now that of advisor to the new House Fellows.  I hope that by the end of the season I will have the same grasp of the new Fellows that I had of the old.  At least today’s episode has left me hopeful.  I am truly excited to see that it seems like House is going back to their old, more familiar formula albeit with some new cast members.
