A "Wicked" Review

SPOILER ALERT

The characters of note are:

Galinda/Glinda - The bubbly, popular, blonde woman who will eventually be known as the Good Witch of the North.

Elphaba - Born with green skin and dubbed the Wicked Witch of the West.

Nessarose - Elphaba’s wheelchair bound sister who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the East.

Fiyero - The seemingly carefree Prince who is loved by Galinda but secretly loves Elphaba.

Boq - A munchkin that has loved Galinda from the moment he met her. He dates Nessarose at Galinda’s request.

The Wizard - A man that has the reputation of greatness but is really only mediocre at what he does.

Madame Morrible - The Headmistress of Shiz University where Galinda and Elphaba attend school together and later the Press Secretary to the Wizard.

Professor Dillamond - Elphaba’s Professor who also happens to be a goat.  Bad things are happening in Oz and forcing animals like Professor Dillamond to stop speaking.

The following is a list of songs in the order they were performed and a brief description of what each is about.

ACT ONE

1. No One Mourns The Wicked - Ensemble

The musical starts with this performance and the audience can see just how much the Wicked Witch of West is detested.

2. Dear Old Shiz - Galinda

Galinda and Elphaba met for the first time at Shiz University where they are forced to room together due to a miscommunication.  Neither one seems to care for the other from the start.

3. The Wizard And I - Elphaba

Madame Morrible has just agreed to teach Elphaba privately and promised that if she is as talented as she appears she will be able to meet the Wizard.  Elphaba is unfailingly loyal and almost naive in her belief that the Wizard will be a wonderful guy and may be the answer to all her prayers.  She looks forward to her meeting with the Wizard in a way that can only fill the audience members with dread and the anticipation that Elphaba will be in for a let down.

4. What Is This Feeling? - Galinda & Elphaba

The song that Elphaba and Galinda sing to each to describe how they each feel about each other - unadulterated loathing.

5. Something Bad - Galinda & Professor Dillamond

Someone has just written a message that "animals should be seen and not heard" on Professor Dillamond’s board. There is something bad happening in Oz.

6. Dancing Through Life - Fiyero, Galinda & Others

Fiyero and Galinda sing a song that is essentially about how carefree their lives are.

7. Popular - Galinda

Galinda feels guilty for a mean trick she has played on Elphaba and also feels indebted to her since Elphaba got Madam Morrible to include Galinda in her private call.  She decides to take Elphaba under her wing and make her "Popular."

8. I’m Not That Girl - Elphaba

Elphaba has secretly fallen in love with Fiyero who she has learned is not so uncaring as he first appeared.  But she believes that he is still in love with Galinda.

9. One Short Day - Galinda & Elphaba

Elphaba takes Galinda with her to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz and this is basically a song about how great that day is.

10. A Sentimental Man - The Wizard

Elphaba meets the Wizard for the first time.  He introduces himself as sort of a father figure who has her best interest at heart. He is just an (innocent) sentimental man.

NOTE: We learn that The Wizard does not have Elphaba’s best interest at heart and that he has tricked her into using magic to merely  accomplish his own goals.  Then the next number comes.  It also becomes apparent that the Wizard is largely behind the cruelty being shown to the animals of Oz.

11. Defying Gravity - Elphaba ( & Galinda)

MY FAVORITE SONG!

"Defying Gravity" begins with Galinda and Elphaba singing I hope your happy now  and expresses the anger they each have towards each other for the way things have turned out. Galinda doesn’t understand why Elphaba won’t just go back to the Wizard, apologize, and continue on with the way things are so that she can have a normal life. Elphaba doesn’t understand how Galinda can’t see that the Wizard and Madame Morrible are doing evil things. Elphaba enchants a broom so that it flies and can help her escape.  Although Elphaba and Galinda sing through the possibility of how much they can do together and there seems to be the possibility that Glinda will go with Elphaba it becomes apparent that Galinda is not ready to make the break and decides to stay behind.  Elphaba flies off and that is the close of the 1st Act.
